So many fighters and martialartists drop their guard when sparring or even when performing drills.
It seems to me that when kicking is involved, this gets worse.
It is perfectly possible to kick whilst maintaining a guard if you posture and position is correct before kicking.
I teach my students to maintain their fingers touching their cheeks as they perform. A hand must return immediately if they are used to strike or defend.  This is especially important in a competitive environment where you will probably need to go several rounds and potentially absorb and deliver continual strength sapping blows.</description>
