Alternatively they are just afraid that their students, once found another club, they might like it more and leave: ultimately that is what's might happen anyway... sooner or later. @ James B

Surely being a 'martial artist' involves awareness and understanding of other styles. How can you expect to defend yourself against someone trained in another style if you do not at least know a little bit about its principles?!
